Besides being expensive, marble is a porous stone that can stain easily unless regularly resealed. Although rare, marble can also scratch or crack, and repairing a natural stone can be quite difficult. 
  1. Quartz: One of the most up-and-coming materials in recent years, quartz is an engineered stone that has given new meaning to durability and convenience. Homes with young kids and busy parents find this heat-resistant, water-resistant, stain-proof material to be an extremely good fit for their kitchens. Quartz offers hardiness, ease of maintenance, and perfection (since every slab is uniform), which means you do not need to spend on regular resealing or professional upkeep. However, this material continues to be more expensive than other options, such as laminate or solid surface materials.
  1. Wood/ Butcher Block: Wood countertops can help create a warm, country kitchen-like vibe or an industrial-chic look. Usually, kitchen countertop slabs are made from hardwoods, such as maple or oak, in a wide range of colors and finishes. With frequent cleaning, sanding, oiling, and resealing, your wooden countertop can last for several decades. However, it is a fairly expensive material, and without proper care, your butcher block can eventually face water damage, stains, bacteria growth, or cracks.
  1. Soapstone: A natural stone that usually comes in darker shades of black or grey, this smooth, silky surface may be an interesting alternative to granite. The stone is hard, and quite resistant to stains and heat. They will take up less space than stacking them in drawers or a cabinet. Design storage for convenience so that items you use frequently are within easy reach. Put items you rarely need at the top of the pantry or upper cabinets. The idea is to keep your counters free for preparing food or working and just a few display items on top. Add a chalk or magnetic board where you can leave reminder notes for each other, a shopping list, instructions or interesting reads.
  • Select low maintenance materials: Heat, scratch and stain resistant countertops last longer and are easier to clean. Granite is popular, but Corian, quartz and stainless steel are equally good choices. These materials are suitable for the backsplash too. Choose flooring you can mop easily and has no or few grout lines. Natural stone, ceramic and laminate flooring is easier to maintain than hardwood. Ask your kitchen designer about your options. There are many budget friendly choices available, but don’t compromise on quality.
  • Open it up: Merging your kitchen with an adjacent family or dining room gives you more space. It’s also more convenient for everyone to hang out together. You can catch the news or your favorite television show while cooking
